I caught a series of images of these two caribou “

I caught a series of images of these two caribou “dancing” during a disagreement. These are two male barren-ground caribou , part of a herd that migrates through the NWT. They move from their wintering grounds in the south part of the territory north to the tundra where they give birth and raise their young. Hopefully these two will father generations of caribou to come.

Had a lovely chance to photograph some white-winged crossbills during a walk outside Yellowknife this past weekend. It was about -30ºC and this small flock was feasting on the seeds of spruce cones to stay warm.

I took a trip to Fort Providence a couple of weeks

I took a trip to Fort Providence a couple of weeks ago and on the way home I spotted this Canadian lynx crossing the highway. The lighting was absolutely gorgeous and I tried to capture a few images but didn't want to speed up and scare it off. Caught this cool shot of them disappearing into the bush though!

Had a bit of a rarity for me, only the second time

Had a bit of a rarity for me, only the second time I've seen a Bay-breasted warbler. The last time I caught a glimpse of one of these birds was in Fort Smith. This ne was just outside Yellowknife. It took a while to locate this one but when I did I snapped a few pics from my kayak. Hoping I'll catch another glimpse of this species before the end of the summer.

The LeConte's sparrow is one of my favourite littl

The LeConte's sparrow is one of my favourite little birds that spend summers around Yellowknife. Their call is similar to a Savanah Sparrow but these birds are often found near water, and often near to the ground in thick willow ground cover. They flap their wings like baby birds wanting to be fed and their blushing orange faces and black streaking make them one of the more colourful of the sparrow species.

On the way home from a loooong day of birding, I s

On the way home from a loooong day of birding, I spotted a chunky little bird perched on top of a roadside sign and thought...what are you? I quickly made a u-turn hoping that I'd at least catch a glimpse of the bird before it flew away and I had a chance to fire off about 30 images before it got tired of me and flew off into the dense brush.

I was excited to see this little owl and thought to myself it looks an awful lot like a burrowing owl but it would be so far out of its normal range maybe it's a juvenile of a more likely species. When I got home, I checked my bird book and it turns out it is a burrowing owl!

Burrowing owls normally live in prairie or desert habitat where they occupy former homes of prairie dogs, ground squirrels, or tortoises. Burrowing owls migrate to southern climates in the Southern US and Mexico for the winter starting in August which makes the appearance of this owl in the NWT even more surprising: Cornell's range map for burrowing owls shows central Alberta as the most northerly breeding area as typical for this species.

The Burrowing Owl as a species has been in steep decline due to the destruction of its natural habitat by development and the use of pesticides and rodenticides poisoning its food supply. It is listed as an endangered species in Canada so it makes this find even more special.

I'm on my summer holiday until after Canada day and taking a trip to the MacKenzie River at Fort Providence for an overnight birding/Fishing trip. This weekend we're celebrating Indigenous People's Day and the Summer Solstice and being out on the land during this time is my favourite way to reflect and remember the importance of environmental stewardship.

We share this land with many other creatures who also call it home.
