Welcome back to Wildknife Photo. This week’s Sunday edition is all about ravens in winter. I’ve been in Yellowknife for 9 winters and one of the subjects I love photographing most during winter is ravens. When it gets to about -20ºC, ravens start to get a little frosty. The colder it gets outside, the frostier the ravens become. Not only does the contrast of the frost give ravens “high-definition” feathers and the high contrast makes great black and white photos.
The other thing I really love is that generally the snow provides a white background which allows me to keep the subject the focus of the image. It’s much easier to isolate a raven against a backdrop of snow than against a backdrop of buildings, garbage, or dense tree branches.
I have quite a few images of frosty ravens and will without a doubt get many more before my time as a photographer comes to an end. I hope you enjoy.
See you next week!
