Well it’s the annual migration South to get some winter birding in and add to that life list! This year I explored the Baja Peninsula around Loreto which was a wonderful base for birding adventures.
I stayed at a golf-resort that supported a surprising number of bird species. There was a variety of habitats for all sorts of birds from shorebirds, to passerines, to herons and this is just a handful of the over 100 species we got to see while we were there.
One of my favourite encounters this year was with the tiny but bright Verdin. I was tickled to stumble across a pair nearly right outside the hotel. They weren’t shy either which made getting to spend time with them and learn more about their song and behaviour accessible. They shared their garden space with a couple of northern mockingbirds who are also quite curious creatures. Add a pair of nesting cactus wrens and some blue-grey gnat catchers and the neighbourhood was quite vibrant.
I love being able to see birds in their off-season colours and know that in a few months they will be hanging out in and around my neighbourhood in Yellowknife over 5000km away!
Up next is part 2 from this mid-winter adventure to Baja California Sur!
