2022 Year in Review
One of the best things about a new year is anticipation of the unknown. Every year I am surprised by the opportunities I stumble across when out photographing wildlife. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever come face to face with a wild wolverine yet it happened this year! One of the most inspiring and motivational aspects of photography is the unpredictable nature of the wilderness. Sometimes I capture a couple of playful fox and other times it is a simple ray of light shining through the trees and illuminating a particular patch of snow. It can be a sunset or an unexpected eruption of grouse fleeing from the ferns at your feet. No matter what, the simplest creatures can bring joy. This happiness and serenity can be had by anyone willing and able to get outside and be immersed in nature.
As I look back on my early photos I can see how much progress I have made in understanding how to translate my experience int he wilderness through my images. At lot of my learning has been in the post-processing, taking the raw camera files and tweaking them to be more interesting to the eye, to capture someone’s attention by accenting some small detail. While many photographers ride around on the upgrade-go-round, I have found what works for me and what I hope to achieve. There is a limit to my budget and the amount of time I can dedicate to photography so I measure my success by the amount of joy I get from my photography rather than on the number of sales, licensing options or other commodification. I do enjoy sharing my images with others in hopes that they will appreciate and protect our natural spaces and having supportive buyers doesn’t hurt either! It is rewarding to have people out there willing to purchase the images I’ve created so if you have purchased my work, thank you.
The images here are some of my favourites from the past year from around the NWT and from my travels this year. Thank you again for another year of your support. I look forward to sharing my adventures with you. Wishing you all the best for 2023!
