Welcome! This week I have a few images of a fox doing some fishing. I captured these images over the course of a couple of days earlier this summer. I hope you enjoy!
I stopped by the lake in mid May to do some birding and kayaking and saw this fox chasing after something in the marsh. It took me a few minutes to realize that she was chasing a fish in the shallow waters.
In the spring and early summer, melting snow raises the water level around the edges of the lake and northern pike will swim into the shallows to hunt and feed. This fox looked to be taking advantage of the shallow waters the fish were exploring to find its own meal.
I watched her chase a fish through the reeds trying to pin it down long enough for her to get her teeth in it but the fish seemed too slippery; it managed to escape into deeper water before the fox could land it. I was fortunate to have a couple of opportunities to try and capture this behaviour as it was difficult to capture decent images of her among the reeds.
I’m hoping that this is a technique she teaches to her offspring so that I might capture a successful fishing fox in the future!
Thanks for having a look.
