A Wide Angle on Foxes

I have more fox images for you this week. I know it’s been two weeks since we’ve had foxes!

I’ve been trying to do something “new” with my fox photos using a 35mm lens rather than a 300mm lens. It means that I need to get much closer to the foxes than I like. Some foxes around Yellowknife are quite habituated to humans and tolerate human presence well. I’d never be able to do this in the wild as foxes outside city limits are much more afraid of humans.

Sadly a lot of the reason these animals are not afraid is because they are fed. Even when ENR puts up signs asking folks not to some people still think they know better. I am respectful of the foxes and their space and limit my time spent with them so they don’t get stressed. This family lives alongside a highway and are often victims of paparazzi. To avoid contributing to crowding, I time my visits to avoid other humans and limit my visits to once a week or less.

I can’t always get close and sometimes foxes aren’t interested in getting closer so I’ll continue to experiment with my photography techniques ever mindful of the comfort, tolerance, and safety of my subjects.
