This week I have some images of a Great Horned Owl family to share with you.
One of the benefits of getting up at the crack of dawn and getting out on a lake is that the birds are up that early too. Last weekend I visited a lake I don’t often paddle due to the number of speed boats roaring around. Not only is it frustrating to turn into every wake, but the noise of the boats makes it difficult to hear birds. Starting out at 6:30 am makes a world of difference!
I approached an area that looked like it might be promising for owls and I heard a screeching sound that could only be the call of a young owl. I spotted a single great horned owl perched up on a rocky area. I took some photos but couldn’t find the nest or young owl with my binoculars so I continued on my way.
On the way back a couple of hours later I passed the same area and spotted the second owl in a tree. Knowing there were two adults in the area and still hearing the owlet, I searched the area again and finally saw the youngster.
I missed out on spring owls this year so I was thrilled to see this family thriving close to home.
That’s all for this week. I hope you enjoyed the photos.
