This week I have some very special images to share with you of juvenile Canada Jays. I’ve only encountered juveniles a few times in my outings and it is always a treat to spend some time with them.
A pair of Canada Jays will stay together as long as both birds are alive. They breed in frigid conditions during February and March and incubate their eggs in temperatures as cold as -30ºC. The eggs are incubated between 18-19 days and nestlings stay in the nest for 22-24 days before fledging.
The oldest Canada Jay on record was at least 17 years, 2 months old. Banded in 1985, it was recaptured and re-released by a bander in Colorado in 2002.
