This week I have some photos from a very special encounter with a Short-eared owl. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a short-eared owl so when someone posted a sighting on our local birding page I was keen to get out and see if I could find it for myself.
I was fortunate to have my son with me who is an excellent owl-spotter. He caught sight of this bird flying over a grassy area along the side of the highway. Short-eared owls are about the same size as a raven but their mottled dark brown back gives them excellent camouflage at eye level. Fortunately, this bird landed in an open space where I could get a decent shot of it scanning before it took off again in search of dinner.
It is always so wonderful to see these predators in their natural habitat.
