This week I have some fun photos of snow buntings. It’s been a while since I had such a wonderful up-close photo session with these toasty little birds. They are quite chatty little things buzzing and twittering and chirping cheerily amongst themselves. It is one of the happiest sounds I know.
I recently had some snow buntings in my backyard filling up on the seed that the redpolls and house sparrows spilled all over the ground. My neighbour must have at least a bag of seed piled up under her feeder! Quite the jackpot for birds bulking up for their migration.
I am hoping to travel to Ulukhaktok in June where I might encounter these birds again as they breed up on the arctic tundra. The juvenile birds are coloured quite differently than the toasty marshmallow colour of their breeding parents looking more like a junco than a bunting.
Hopefully, I will have a chance to photograph some while I’m there and share some images of the young birds from the far north.
