Life is picking up out here and birds are starting to arrive. If you have been following this page for a while, you know that owls are around quite reliably in April. A couple of weeks ago I went out to search for Great Grey Owls that hang out along the highway and happened upon a scuffle between a Great Grey and a pair of Canada Jays.
I’m not exactly sure what all the fuss was about however I suspect that the Canada Jays had a young nearby and the presence of the owl was making them nervous. One kept its distance and the other actively harassed the owl, flying around and vocalizing. The owl appeared slightly annoyed and eventually flew off away from the chattering jays.
A couple of years ago this would have been Grey vs. Gray but now that the Corvid’s name has changed, this bout has been re-named Grey vs. Canada. Sounds too much like my day job!
At the end of my encounter, I can safely say the result was a draw. The owl flew off and the jays….laughed? Not sure about the birds but I sure had fun!
