Gulls on Guard

Winter seems to have arrived in earnest here in Yellowknife and it won’t be long until the lakes are frozen over and the snow and ice adventures will begin.

This week I wanted to share some photos of gulls to show their particularly quirky personalities. We get quite a few species of gulls in Yellowknife, some who stay all summer and some who just pass through on their way to somewhere else.

We had a wet summer this year and while gulls spend most of their time around water it appeared that even some of them were annoyed with all the rain. This series of images was taken at the entrance to the Dettah Ice road in Yellowknife shortly after the ice crossing had closed for the season. There was a couple of ring-billed gulls and a California gull that seemed to have taken up posts on the barricade as if guarding the newly open water.

I had fun watching them and taking photos while they squawked and preened along the sawhorse. Most of the gulls have left for the season but I look forward to their rowdy return next spring.
