Bears in June

Welcome back to the Sunday edition.
A couple of weeks ago I took my son out for a wiener roast in spite of the cold and windy weather. The temperatures were just beginning to climb into the “comfortable” zone and we parked near a small lake and listened to the birds and the wind in the trees. We tried our luck with fishing but the fish weren’t having it!

On our way home my son pointed at something large shuffling along the road. It turned out to be the bear in the first two photos. He was a little bit shy but wasn’t in a terrible hurry to get up into the bush until a large pickup truck sped by spooking him up the hill and into the trees.

It wasn’t much farther and I spotted a fuzzy black butt in the ditch. The little bear in the third photo is probably out on his own for his first summer. Just look at that baby face!
Bears usually have cubs with them for 2 winters after they are born and then they are chased off so the sow can mate and start the cycle again.

He was nearing a couple of folks who were camped along the side of the road. He could definitely smell whatever they were cooking! I warned them of this little one’s presence hoping that their two dogs would be a deterrent. In hindsight, I probably should have got out of the truck and hazed the bear but I was worried that he might get run over with the amount of traffic on the road.

Hopefully, this little one found something more naturally appetizing away from people and roads. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be chased away by your mother to fend on your own after just a couple of years. I remember how hard it was for me to adjust to being on my own after 18 years!

That’s all for this week. Please feel free to share this with any of your bear-loving friends. Take care and have a good week.
