National Bird Day

Happy National Bird Day, everyone! The Avian Welfare Coalition’s National Bird Day campaign aims to improve the welfare of parrots and other birds by discouraging their purchase as pets, and encouraging the support of wild bird habitat conservation programs and captive bird rescue organizations and sanctuaries. National Bird Day is an annual holiday where folks celebrate birds through birdwatching, study, and other bird-related activities.

The founders of National Bird Day have a wonderful website filled with information about how individuals can help birds as well as some wonderful educational materials. You can visit their website http://www.avianwelfare.org/nationalbirdday/ to see more.

Everyone seems to have their favourite bird/birds. I have a hard time choosing because they all have such unique skills and abilities. If I had to choose, Ravens would definitely be on my list for their cleverness, and terns as well because of their endurance and tenacity. I’m not sure I could choose just one warbler as a favourite and of course, the house sparrow would also be there as they offer up a cheerful song even in the dead of winter.

I’ve included some of my favourite bird images to celebrate today. What are your favourite birds?
