Spring Foxes

How long has it been since I posted photos of Yellowknife foxes? A few weeks at least! We had some beautiful (if intermittent) weather in April and I took full advantage to check in on the local foxes to see how they were making out after the long hard winter.

It took a little bit of hanging about for the foxes to come around and investigate. I was fortunate to catch a glimpse of 3 red foxes and 3 cross foxes but I didn’t catch sight of the little black fox I’d seen around. I am hoping this means she is holed up safely with her growing kits and that in a few weeks I’ll have a chance to see (and photograph) her babies.

The foxes that I did see all looked healthy for the most part. One of the cross foxes seemed to have an injured rear leg. She was limping quite a bit and noticeably slower than her two companions. I’ve seen a fox with a missing toe survive to raise her kits so I’m hoping that this fox’s injury will heal quickly.

A few of them are beginning to shed out their winter coats and with the longer days and warmer weather, will soon be scrawnier versions of themselves. It is truly incredible how different foxes look without their bushy winter coats.

I’m not sure if this family group will stick together all summer or whether they will disperse to different parts of the city. I’m hoping that with some notes and study I’ll be able to more readily identify individuals. It will be interesting to see if I see any familiar faces in other parts of the city.

I hope you enjoy the latest photos of this little family. Look for updates on them in the upcoming months. As always, feel free to share!

Thanks for visiting and I hope to see you again next week.
