The cold spring we had has taken its toll on an already frustrating situation. March and April are typically the time to spot owls and this year has been no exception. It felt like FOREVER waiting for these beauties to finally appear but here they are. It’s about time, owls!
There has been a record number of birds this year and a record number of owl sightings as well. The last few years we have spotted one or two owls in our usual scouting area but this year there have been up to 10 great grey owls spotted in one trip! The most owls we spotted was 6 in one trip.
Many more people have had the opportunity to see these magnificent birds up close and it is my hope that with the increased visibility will come an increase in the desire to help protect and preserve our wildlife. There is no substitute for seeing an animal in the wild, watching it move and having it look right at you. A photo just can’t transmit that sort of experience no matter how good it is.
So while you are hanging out with your kids, dog, or significant other, grab your binoculars and take a walk. There are so many beautiful songs to hear and so many tiny creatures to meet.
